Why a campfire?

A campfire is much more than just a source of warmth. It is a place where stories are told, friendships are strengthened and memories are made. The crackling sound of the wood, the dancing flames and the cozy atmosphere make a campfire the centerpiece of your camping experience.

Supplies for a campfire

Before you get started starting a campfire, it's important to have the right supplies on hand. Here's a checklist of what you'll need:

  1. Dry wood: The best is dry wood that burns well and produces little smoke. Think oak or birch wood. At Domaine du Bocq you can buy wood at the reception.
  2. Lighting cubes or wood: Small pieces of wood or special kindling to start the fire with.
  3. Matches or lighter: Always make sure you have a reliable way to light the fire.
  4. Fire Bowl: At Domaine du Bocq, it is permitted to light fires in a dense firebowl raised off the ground. These fire bowls can be rented at the reception.
  5. Firefighting equipment: Always have a bucket of water or sand on hand for emergencies.

Step-by-step guide to starting a camping campfire

Below is a step-by-step guide to starting a campfire:

Step 1: Preparing the fire pit
Choose a flat, open area, free of overhanging branches and other flammable materials. Make sure your fire pit is at least three feet away from tents and other structures.

Step 2: Collecting fuel
Gather three types of wood: kindling (small branches), firewood (medium-sized branches) and logs (large pieces of wood). Start with the kindling, followed by the firewood, and finish with the logs. At Domaine du Bocq, gathering wood is prohibited. Be sure to buy wood at the reception.

Step 3: Building the fire
Make a small pyramid of kindling and firewood in the fire bowl. Place firelighters or wood at the bottom of the pyramid.

Step 4: Lighting the fire
Use matches or a lighter to light the firelighters or wood. Stay careful and keep an eye out as the fire spreads.

Step 5: Maintaining the fire
Gradually add larger pieces of wood as the fire grows stronger. Make sure the fire burns evenly by rearranging the wood regularly.

Safety First

Safety is paramount when starting a campfire. Here are some important tips for staying safe:

  • Always monitoring: Never leave the fire unattended.
  • Have firefighting equipment on hand: Always have a bucket of water, sand or a fire extinguisher within easy reach.
  • Check local rules: At Domaine du Bocq, it is permitted to light fires in a dense fire bowl placed off the ground. Fire pits and fire directly on the grass are prohibited.
  • Don't build the fire too big: Keep the campfire manageable and within a safe size.
  • Extinguishing the fire: Make sure the fire is completely extinguished before leaving the place. Pour water over the ashes and stir to make sure all smoldering remains are extinguished.
